The Identification and Reconciliation also known as the Identification Reconciliation Engine (IRE). It provides a centralized method for identifying and reconciling data from different data sources.
Identification Rule: It is used to identify new CIs and existing CIs.
Reconciliation Rule: It is used for updating the data if new values are from a more trusted source than existing data. This prevents less reliable data sources from updating fields in a class. Without reconciliation rules, datasources would overwrite each other's updates.
But why do we need the IRE?
Multiple sources updating the CMDB with their own logic without a centralized framework could lead to duplicate Cis, undesired updates, as well as attribute flapping (multiple sources continuously updating the same fields with different values).
A centralized framework is necessary to ensure that the CMDB is free of duplicates and has the most relevant information up to date.
